A "chicken soup" sort of book that touches people's hearts.  Of course, the animal-human bond is expressed here - the idea of a best friend indicates love and respect through thick and thin.  Young women aged 12 and up, especially those wanting to be writers, would love this book as a gift.  Stories are short and it makes for sweet dreams if read before bed.
